Co-op & PGWP Complete Guide
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most reliable pathways to Canadian permanent residency. Adding a Co-op work term shortens the timeline by up to 1 year. Based on CEWIL 2024 data and IRCC statistics.
Why Co-op changes everything
PGWP alone isn't enough for PR — you need 1 year of Canadian skilled work experience for Express Entry. Without Co-op, most graduates spend 6+ months job-searching after graduation, extending the total timeline. Co-op gives you a Canadian employer network before you graduate.
Timeline comparison
Co-op route vs PGWP-only route:
| Milestone | With Co-op | Without Co-op |
|---|---|---|
| Graduation | Month 24 | Month 24 |
| First job | Month 24–25 (via Co-op employer) | Month 30+ (cold job search) |
| 1yr Canadian experience | Month 36 | Month 42 |
| PR application | Month 36–42 | Month 42–48 |
| Total timeline | 3.5–4 years | 4.5–5 years |

After PGWP, target Express Entry's Canadian Experience Class (CEC). Requirements: 1 year of TEER 0–3 work experience in Canada, CLB 7 English (speaking/listening) or CLB 5 (reading/writing). Current CRS cutoffs range from 491–541 depending on draw type. French speakers have a significant advantage.
